Slow Dentistry: become the best slowly but surely!

Beyond mainstream: opinion leader Miguel Stanley points out the route to success

Slow Dentistry Top European opinion leader and world Slow Dentistry pioneer: Dr Miguel Stanley Save the Date

First meeting in London on 23rd November

Everyone wants to be successful. So, when and how do we decide we’re finally successful enough? If you’re sick and tired of hearing at event after event how you can milk that little bit more out of your practice with “higher, further, faster” methods, then you can now breathe a sigh of relief: That’s the last thing you can expect at the world’s first SlowDentistry meeting on 23rd November 2019 in London. The Swiss organisation shows you how to deliver a podium performance in dental disciplines with the opposite of all that hectic clamouring for success. Improved standards, more time – one of the most sought-after opinion leaders of our time explains why that’s the route that leads to dentistry of the highest calibre: Dr Miguel Stanley.

The Portuguese dentist runs the White Clinic in Lisbon, one of the country’s most acclaimed dental facilities, which welcomes patients from all over Europe and even further afield. This kind of success is no coincidence and cannot be explained merely by a team of premium specialists and an outstanding range of modern instruments and equipment. There is another thing which also distinguishes Dr Miguel Stanley from many of his colleagues: his philosophy.

Unlike the majority, he is not interested in methods that save as much time and generate as much profit as possible. His aim is not to treat as many patients as possible in his practice on one day. Dr Stanley is one of the first proponents of the Slow Dentistry movement, which originated in Switzerland, where the eponymous organisation also has its headquarters.

Awareness of safety, understanding, well-being and comfort

Slow Dentistry doesn’t leave anyone waiting – quite the contrary in fact. It delivers outstanding treatment quality, as the practitioner doesn’t just take time for dental problems. He also has a whole range of secondary aspects on his radar: from practice workflows to the patient’s general well-being. The four cornerstones of the Slow Dentistry concept are awareness of the patient’s safety, understanding, well-being and comfort. It sounds like an easy goal to achieve, but it can truly revolutionise the way a practice is run – to both the patient’s and dentist’s satisfaction.

Dr Miguel Stanley knows from experience: “The majority of clinics are so focussed on patient satisfaction with regard to the whole picture that they often lose sight of the small details such as comprehensive disinfection between two treatments. However, it is fundamentally important to take time in this critical area in particular if you want to prevent cross-contaminations.” There he mentions one of the essential aspects of Slow Dentistry, which challenges dentists to invest more time in each patient, focus more strongly on hygiene, ensure the patient can follow the treatment steps and take care of people’s general well-being.

The results are excellence and satisfaction: “My patients decide intentionally to invest a little more as they know that we devote a great deal of attention to their overall well-being, not just their dental health,” said Dr Stanley. And this is why he wants to share his experiences and the way to get there.

It is also why he is one of eight internationally renowned dentists speaking at the first Slow Dentistry meeting on 23rd November and demonstrating how the concept can be integrated into the workflows in any practice. Dr Stanley said, “I am very proud to be part of this network.” You can find out more about how you, too, can become a part of it with the wealth of information available in the scope of the Slow Dentistry world première in London.
